Today is Maulidur Rasul, a celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

I like to share 10 things about our beloved Prophet.

1. He was born on 12th of Rabiulawal which is equivalent to 20th April 571M. Therefore the celebration of Maulidur Rasul will varies if you refer to the Gregorian calendar. Rabiulawal is the 3rd month in the Islamic calendar after Muharram and Safar.

2. He was born in Makkah. The year he was born is called the year of elephant based on the event when a troop of armies led by a man named Abrahah who used elephants as their form of travel to attack the Kaabah, located in Makkah. Their plan failed. There is a special verse in the Quran on this event.

3. His father’s name is Abdullah. But the prophet never got know him. Abdullah dies when his wife was two-month pregnant in Yathrib, the former name for Madinah. During pilgrimage, muslims often visit Madinah where the Mosque of Prophet is located (Masjid Nabawi) in which his body was placed.

4. His mother’s name is Aminah. Aminah gave birth to prophet Muhammad at the house of Abu Talib, the prohet’s uncle from his father’s side. His mother dies when he was six year old.

5. In the early of the prophet, he was breastfed by two women, Thusaybah and Halimah. The former breastfed for only few days while the latter last for two years.

6. When his mother dies, prophet Muhammad was taken care of by his grandfather, Abdul Mutalib and uncle, Abu Talib. His grandfather was a leader in Mekah and was the owner of zam zam well, which was founded by the prophet Ismail hundreds of years prior to that.

7. Abi Talib has been protecting the prophet since day one of the Prophet’s life til he dies. The people of Makkah who detested the Prophet were not able to hurt the Prophet due to their respect towards Abu Talib. This changes when Abu Talib dies.

8. Since very early of his adolescent years, he has shown interest in business activities. He would follow his uncle on the trade trips where he met many people. Among those he met was a Jewish priest who has identified the prophet as a future leader of human kind.

9. Prophet Muhammad married Khadijah at the age 25. Khadijah was 40 at the time of their marriage. It is Khadijah who proposed to the prophet. The prophet is very well known for his amazing characters and honesty that it attracted Khadijah to propose to the Prophet.

10. Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from Allah via the angle Jibril at the age of 40. The first revelation was on the importance of knowledge. Al Quran is a holy book of Islam which contains relevant and realistic guidelines for the whole humankind. No changes was ever made to the verses since it was revealed. What we have now is exactly the verses that was brought down to the Prophet more 1400 years ago.

Prophet Muhammad has been placed as the most influential person in human history. Currently, there more than two billions Muslims all over the world.

Let us celebrate this beautiful day by following his teaching with discipline.

“Allahumma solli ‘ala Muhammad. Wa ‘alaa ali Muhammad.”
